The Art of Being Seen: Alexandria's Story as a Painter and Fashion Designer

I was born in Charlotte, NC, but my journey began when I boarded a plane at just two weeks old, heading to Puerto Rico, where I lived until I was about five. My father managed resorts along the beach in San Juan, so I grew up in a world of sand, sea, and sun. My twin sister and I spent our days swimming in the ocean and embarking on daily adventures, with the rhythm of the waves as our constant backdrop. Later, we moved to a small condo in Humacao, where we attended Montessori school. I have fond memories of singing Spanish songs, playing games under the hot sun, and taking walks to explore native florals.

The vibrant culture of Puerto Rico, especially the pastel colors, the 90s red, and the unique flair of that era, deeply influenced my creative spirit. The sight of women in blazers, breaking into a more egalitarian role during the 90s, left a lasting impression on me, inspiring much of my work today.

Eventually, we moved back to the South, where I’ve spent most of my life in Charlotte, NC. I see a beautiful parallel between the hot summer sun of the South and the necessity for cool dresses that embody softness, femininity, and the sophistication of an evolving female role in society. My mother, an interior designer, taught me the importance of color, texture, and smart design—principles I carry into my fashion work.

As a painter and fashion designer, I find universal inspiration in the basic concepts of art: color, line, texture, composition, and scale. I believe that understanding the fundamentals of design allows us to speak the language of art across all mediums, from painting to interior design and fashion. I love seeing how others style my designs, making them uniquely their own. With a background in art therapy, I understand the deep human desire to be seen. My hope is that everyone who wears Flora by Alexandria feels seen, celebrated, and empowered.

Why Floral Fashion?

I chose to focus on florals because, for me, they evoke a sense of joy and nostalgia. There's something timeless about florals—they can instantly transport you back to your grandmother's tablecloth or that vintage wallpaper in a childhood home. For years, I found myself going from brand to brand, eagerly checking who had floral prints in stock or in season. Then it hit me—why not create a space where all the florals I love could exist together? That’s how my concept for Flora by Alexandria was born.

I envision a world where florals are a daily staple, not just an occasional choice. Imagine wearing florals from head to toe every day—how might that change the way we move through our week? That’s the idea behind my floral basics collection. My goal is to build a floral capsule wardrobe that dares people to embrace florals in every aspect of their attire.

Hidden Floral Elements

As our small-batch brand grows and evolves, I’m thrilled to have you along for the journey. My designs always feature a floral element, even if it’s hidden in the most unexpected places. Take our salmon pink striped dress, for instance—you’ll find a tiny rose silhouette subtly woven into the stripes or perhaps a custom floral fabric button that ties the piece together.

For me, these hidden florals are a playful challenge to you, the wearer. Can you find the flowers in our prints? It’s these little details that make each piece special, adding a touch of whimsy and a connection to nature that I hope brings a smile. Thank you for being part of Flora by Alexandria and for sharing in my love for florals.
